'It needs to stop': AR Gov. Sarah Sanders bans list of 'woke' words she considers 'demeaning to women'
20 October 2023
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders took a page from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' "anti-woke" playbook when, on October 19, she unveiled a list of "woke" terms she has banned from use in her state's government via an executive order.
At a press conference in Little Rock, Sanders — a right-wing Republican who formerly served as White House press secretary in the Trump Administration — told reporters, "Today, we're taking a stand against woke nonsense. What frankly started as a fad among a few grad students has seeped down into corporations, the health care industry and increasingly the state government. It's demeaning to women, and it needs to stop."
Adam Roberts of 40/29 News in Arkansas reports, "Google searches executed Thursday afternoon of all these terms showed no results for any of the banned terms on Arkansas.gov, with the exception of 'human milk.' That phrase is used on documents such as an instructional flyer for new mothers and a training module clarifying that human milk should not automatically be treated as a potentially infectious body fluid."

In her executive order, Sanders declared that state employees should use "pregnant women" or "pregnant mom" instead of "pregnant people"; "breast milk" instead of "human milk"; "birth mom" instead of "birthing person" or "laboring person"; and "breastfeeding" instead of "chestfeeding." The Arkansas governor also banned the use of "womyn" instead of "woman."
This wasn't the first time Sanders banned "woke" terms from use in Arkansas' state government.
In January, she directed state workers to use "Latino" or "Latina" instead of "Latinx" — arguing that "Latinx" is offensive to most Latinos. Republicans, however, are not alone in their disdain for the term "Latinx." Liberal Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona) and veteran Democratic strategist James Carville have tried to discourage Democrats from using a term that the vast majority of Latinos reject.
