GOP strategist: Why Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ slight against Harris' shouldn’t 'be overlooked'

Republican strategist Susan Del Percio insists a statement Arkansas Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders' made this week moderating Donald Trump's town hall in Michigan "has backfired," and rightfully so.

Introducing the former president ahead of the Flint, Michigan appearance, Sanders mentioned her children, saying they "keep her humble." The GOP governor then took aim at 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

"Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble," Sanders said.

Del Percio notes, "Knowing that Vice President Kamala Harris has two stepchildren who call her 'Momala,' Sanders clearly meant it as a slight against Harris, personally, for not having biological children."

"The cruelty in this line should not be overlooked," the MSNBC analyst emphasizes.

Del Percio also notes, "Ironically, Sanders was probably chosen to moderate the event because Trump is facing a tremendous, perhaps historic, gender gap with women."

However, Sanders looked to take the attack further, the GOP strategist suggests.

"She sought to modify that narrative into an equally ugly one: 'She’s not like us,' suggesting that because Harris doesn’t have her own biological children, she’s an other, and should be reviled for it."
