GOP lawmaker who promised to 'continue his research' on 'blatantly racist' theory stripped of committees

A Michigan Republican on Monday was stripped of his committee assignments in the state House of Representatives over a social media post about the “great replacement” theory, The Detroit News reports.

On Feb. 6, Michigan state Rep. Josh Schriver shared a graphic posted by far-right “Republican political operative” Jack Posobiec that “depicted black figurines covering most of a map of the world, with white figures occupying smaller sections of Australia, Canada, northern Europe and the northern United States," The Detroit News reports.

Posobiec’s graphic purported to depict the “great replacement theory,” which the Guardian calls “the racist premise that white Americans and Europeans are being actively ‘replaced’ by non-white immigrants.” Schriver’s quote-tweet of Posobiec also included an emoji signifying a downward trend.

Asked by The Detroit News about his post, Schriver thanked Posobiec and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for “sharing links” on the "great replacement" theory and promised to “continue [his] research on these issues.”

"I'm opposed to racists, race baiters, and victim politics," Schriver said. ”What I find strange is the agenda to demoralize and reduce the white portion of our population. That's not inclusive and Christ is inclusive!"

According to the Detroit News, “In the days since his comments were reported, Schriver has posted on X repeatedly on the topic, calling criticism of his post ‘an anti-white agenda’ and accusing media of attempting ‘to start a race war.’" Monday, House Speaker Joe Tate “revoked Schriver’s privileges” — though the Republican “will still be able to vote on the House floor.”

“Rep. Schriver has a history of promoting debunked theories and dangerous rhetoric that jeopardizes the safety of Michigan residents and contributes to a hostile and uncomfortable environment for others,” Tate said.

"The House of Representatives is the people’s house, and all Michiganders should look upon this body and take pride in how we conduct ourselves. It is also a workplace, and I have a responsibility to make sure the employees of the House feel safe and secure,” Tate added.
