Colbert capped off his fire-breathing pre-coverage of this week with a brief report on medical marijuana in the NFL and concern for players' "skull-meat."
Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League, gave an unofficial endorsement for pot in football in a short clip featured on the show: "I don't know what's going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve, either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, but we will try to continually support the evolution of medicine."
"That statement was so rambling he had to be high," joked Colbert. Though many NFL players have likely consumed marijuana for a long time, the endorsement by the professional league is another sign of the tide turning in public perception of pot. Colbert also took shots at the right-wing commentariat who oppose reforms out of growing concern for long term brain-damage suffered by players.
Bob Beckel dropped the most ridicule worthy line: "In this day and age, people aren't very happy with their lives, the one thing they got to look forward to is football." The comedian proceeded to mock Beckel's insistence that the existential malaise of millions of Americans can be alleviated by watching gladiator-type violence on television.
