Expert fears 'more racist terror attacks' from 'pathological white right'

Progressive author Tim Wise has had a lot to say about the dangers that racism poses in the United States. Wise, during the Barack Obama years, never embraced the idea that the U.S. entered a "post-racial" age; the author has warned that violent racism poses an ongoing threat.

Wise discussed that threat during an interview with Salon's Chauncey DeVega published on September 14.

When DeVega noted that a racially motivated mass shooting occurred in Jacksonville, Florida on the 60th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luthr King Jr.'s march on Washington, D.C., Wise responded, "I am obviously horrified and concerned that we're going to see more white racist terror attacks and hate crimes. When they figure out they can't win legitimately at the ballot box, they're going to turn to the bullet. They certainly have a lot of guns, and they have a lot of rage. I don't mean that in a prophetic way; it is pretty obvious."

The author noted the "real connections between hateful rhetoric and political violence," arguing that there is "something horribly dysfunctional and pathological in white culture right now."

"Thankfully, the white right is not as smart as they need to be to get all the things done that they want," Wise told DeVega. "The question is: Can we stop them before they get smart and really figure out how to play the game? Because I think at this point, they still are just so overzealous about their reactionary beliefs that they end up alienating the large numbers of supporters they need to create a broad coalition. I don't want to keep gambling on that."
