Former Vice President Mike Pence implied in an interview with Meet the Press which is set to air this Sunday that programs such as Social Security and Medicare are costing the United States too much money.
Pence officially declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on June 5th, 2023, making him the tenth member of his party to mount a challenge to its frontrunner, twice-indicted ex-President Donald Trump.
Speaking with outgoing moderator Chuck Todd, Pence jabbed at Trump to chalk up his own right-wing credentials.

"Cuz look. In, in 2016, Donald Trump promised to govern as a conservative," Pence said. "And I'm proud to say that we did for four years under the Trump-Pence administration. But he makes no such promise today. Not only has he been walking away from a, a clear commitment to the right to life, but look, we, we have a national debt the size of our nation's economy. Joe Biden's policy is insolvency. He won't even talk about the seventy percent of the federal budget that represents entitlements that's driving that debt."
Todd asked, "Does President Trump wanna talk about it?"
Pence replied that "Donald Trump's position on the national debt is identical to Joe Biden's. And, and, and to me, the Republican Party has to be the party of growth and fiscal responsibility and reform. I think we owe it to those, those kids of mine and yours, to my granddaughters, to square our shoulders and, and be straight with the American people about the magnitude of this national debt."
