'Those are the facts': Ex-NC gov slams 'fellow Republicans' for trying to 'spin' election results

North Carolina showed how much of a swing state it is when, in 2024, voters elected a Democratic governor, Josh Stein, but favored Republican Donald Trump over Democrat Kamala Harris by roughly 3.5 percent in the presidential race. And the competition for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court was a real nail-biter, with Democratic Justice Allison Riggs defeating Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin by only 735 votes.

Griffin, however, never conceded and is hoping to overturn the election results if he can get enough votes thrown out.

Former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican, is among the people on the right who is standing up for Riggs and urging Griffin to accept the election results.

In a late April video for Common Cause North Carolina, McCrory argued, "We all know how spin helps win elections. We see it in campaign commercials, stump speeches and candidate debates right up until the final votes are counted. But months after Election Day, Republicans in Raleigh are still spinning in the race for North Carolina Supreme Court."

McCrory continued, "It's the only election in the country that still hasn't been decided. Democratic Allison Griffin beat Republican Jefferson Griffin by 735 votes. But Griffin is suing to have thousands of ballots, mostly from military families stationed overseas, tossed out. Those are the facts. Now, here's the spin. Republicans are saying those votes for Supreme Court don't count because overseas military voters didn't show ID. In fact, the state never even asked them for ID."

The former North Carolina governor noted that Griffin is the only North Carolina candidate who "asked for those military overseas votes not to be counted."

"Look, I'm a Republican," McCrory said in the video. "I supported Jefferson for Supreme Court. I wanted him to win. But spinning your way into a Supreme Court seat isn't the way to do it…. Sorry, fellow Republicans, you can't spin your way out of this one."
