The last U.S. president to serve more than two terms was Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was serving his fourth term when he died in office on April 12, 1945. Two years later, in 1947, Congress approved the U.S. Constitution's 22nd Amendment — which limits presidents to two terms — and its ratification by the states was completed in 1951. When Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected president in 1952, he knew that if he ran for reelection in 1956 and won, he would be ineligible for a third term in 1960.
But some MAGA Republicans are promoting the idea that President Donald Trump is eligible to run for a third term in 2028, and far-right Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tennessee) is drawing scathing criticism for making that claim.
In a Saturday, August 16 post on X, formerly Twitter, the MAGA congressman wrote, "Give Trump a third term, give him a Peace Prize, and let him run D.C. as long as he wants."

Ogles' "run D.C." comment was in reference to Trump federalizing the police force in the U.S. capital.
Progressive firebrand and former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan was quick to call Ogles out, tweeting, "If you're under any illusions about what an authoritarian personality cult the GOP has become, they're not hiding it."
Brian Mistrot, president of the One Nation Movement, tweeted, "The Constitution limits a POTUS to 2 terms, which this numb-nuts knows. But s—— on the Constitution allows him to keep making $200k/year off taxpayers and stay in power. More proof that Republicans have given up on the Constitution & rule of law."
Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones, a Democrat, posted, "If 'pick me' energy were a person. So embarrassing."

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, a Never Trump conservative and former Republican, told Ogles, "225 days ago, you raised your right hand and swore to support & defend the Constitution of the United States. Shame on you."
In a tweeted video, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffires (D-New York), declared, "Andy Ogles is a complete and total fraud. Your whole life is fake, bro. You're a complete and total embarrassment. We need to throw you out of Congress."
Nina Turner, who formerly chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vermont) presidential campaign, tweeted, "This should be grounds for removal. This is not acceptable for a Representative, it’s blatantly unconstitutional."
