'Obviously issues and flaws': No Labels co-chair Hogan defends challenge to two-party system

Ex-Maryland Republican governor and national co-chair of the non-partisan No Labels group Larry Hogan on Sunday pushed back against fears that a presidential longshot nominated by his organization could siphon enough votes away from President Joe Biden to land former President Donald Trump back in the White House in 2024.

MSNBC host Jen Psaki recalled on her show that "back in 2016, also when there was an appetite for a third party candidate, there was a third party candidate, and Jill Stein won more votes than the margin between Trump and [Democrat Hillary] Clinton, which may have made the difference, did make the difference in probably putting Trump over the edge."

That prompted Psaki to ask Hogan, "So how can you argue be so confident that, and how can No Labels be so confident that, a third party won't elect Trump?"

Hogan disagreed with that assessment and suggested that concerns should be redirected elsewhere.

"Well, you have more than a, you have a third party candidate now and the Green Party candidate is pulling about four or five percent away from completely away from Biden," Hogan said. "So if you wanna talk about a spoiler, they should focus in on Cornell West, or they should focus in on the people that are pulling thirty percent of the people away in a primary."

Hogan, a vocal never-Trumper who ruled out running in 2024, insisted that partisanship fatigue is the problem.

"No Labels is just — has an idea that maybe if we get to this point where nobody in America wants the Republican or Democrat, they might run a ticket," Hogan opined. "We don't know who they are, and we don't know who they would pull from or whether it would be a Republican or a Democrat. So, but they, there are obviously issues and flaws or we wouldn't have two candidates that so many people don't wanna vote for."
