NY mayor mocked over 'worst answer any politician has ever given to a softball question'
18 December 2023
As New York Mayor Eric Adams faces a federal investigation into his campaign's fundraising, and his approval rating plunges to the lowest of any New York City mayor's since 1996, the Democratic leader endured significant backlash Monday over a tone-deaf response during a local interview.
Tim Miller, writer for The Bulwark, shared a video via X (formerly Twitter) from the mayor's conversation with WPIX host Dan Mannerino, writing, "Eric Adams gives the worst answer any politician has ever given to a soft ball question."
In the video, Mannerino asks, "Mr. Mayor, we've come to the end of what was a very eventful 2023. So, when you look at the totality of the year, if you had to describe it, and it's tough to do, in one word, what would that word be? And tell me why."

Adams replies, "Uh, New York. This is a place where every day you wake up, you could experience anything from a plane crashing into our Trade Center, to a person who's celebrating a new business that's open. This is a very, very complicated city. And that's why this the greatest city on the globe."
In response, Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissman wrote, "One fun thing about Eric Adams is that there is absolutely no way that AI could generate his responses to questions."
Tennessee Holler founder Tim Kanew commented, "Not hyperbole."
Vanity Fair special correspondent Molly Jong-Fast said, "What do words mean anyway?"
Author and activist Hemant Mehta commented, "How do you fail an open-book, any-answer-works test?"
MSNBC columnist Eric Michael Garcia said, "Trump could only dream of concocting an answer like this"
