Nikki Haley dodges reconciling the GOP’s 'law and order' bravado with Trump’s frontrunner status

CNN anchor Jake Tapper asked former United States ambassador to the United Nations, South Carolina governor, and 2024 Republican presidential primary candidate Nikki Haley on Sunday how the GOP reconciles its "law and order" bravado with legally embattled ex-President Donald Trump's exalted status among voter base.

"Can the Republican Party credibly claim to be a law and order party with a nominee who is facing 91 felony counts?" Tapper wondered.

"Well, Jake, I’ll tell you this. I was at the United Nations and I saw many countries who would say someone was a criminal before they were tried," Haley responded. "This is America. We don’t do that. You’re not convicted until you’ve had the opportunity to defend yourself."

Haley continued, "So let’s let Donald Trump defend himself. Let’s see what happens. And if he is convicted, then the American people will deal with it then."

Haley added, "But let’s let’s have the blessings that we have in America, which is everybody is innocent until proven guilty. Let’s let the evidence play out. Let’s let the lawyers do their thing and let’s see what Donald Trump does and then we can make a decision. But I have faith in the American people. I trust them. And I trust what will happen will be the right thing for our country."
