New York legislator gets 'clear' about real reason he 'stopped by' Santos’ office

United States Rep. George Santos (R-NY) publicly thanked New York State Rep. Josh Lafazan, a Democrat, for stopping by the congressman's state office this week regarding some "concerns," but did not specify the truth about the pair's conversation, HuffPost reports.

Painting his encounter with the Nassau County legislator as a cordial conversation, Santos tweeted, "I want to personally thank @JoshLafazan for stopping by my Douglaston office today. It was great to sit down & discuss the concerns that were addressed in the letter he brought in. #NY03"

Shortly after the congressman expressed his gratitude towards Lafazan, the state representative shared his own version of the story, tweeting, "Let's be very clear: I did not 'stop by' your office. I hosted a protest *outside* your office calling on you to resign, and then hand-delivered you a letter to stop wasting police resources. Can't say I'm surprised you choose to distort the truth here - you're very good at it."

Lafazan, who is also a University of Pennsylvania doctoral student, is known for his unwavering criticism towards Santos, recently demanding the the revocation of his security clearance, asking the Department of Justice to "install a federal monitor to oversee" the congressman's campaign fund and even proposing legislation that would make lying about a candidate’s education and employment history a misdemeanor.

Several Twitter users called out Santos' fabrication of the interaction between the two, and urged the congressman to resign, as many of his local New York constituents and congressional colleagues have done.

Dr. Chuck Sneed, M.D., wrote, "Masterclass in political framing."

Social and environmental justice advocate Denise Griewisch tweeted, "Wow. You’re actually trying to turn a protest outside your office into some kind of friendly meeting with constituents? No one wants you in our Capitol. Resign."
