'That window for her has passed': Insiders say MTG may abandon push to oust Speaker Johnson

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Georgia) campaign to oust Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) as House speaker hit a snag when liberal Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) voiced his opposition.

Khanna made it clear that despite his policy disagreements with Johnson, he believes the Republican House speaker acted in good faith during bipartisan negotiations on a foreign aid package — and said he would vote against ousting him. The California congressman said that Johnson "deserves to keep his job."

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York), according to Axios reporter Andrew Solender, has also suggested that he would vote against removing Johnson as speaker.

Axios' Juliegrace Brufke, in an article published on April 30, reports that Greene's anti-Johnson push appears to be running out of steam.

House lawmakers interviewed by Axios are now saying that they doubt Greene's "motion to vacate" will come up for a full House vote.

One of them said of Greene, "I don't think she's going to do it. I think that window for her has passed."

Another lawmaker told Axios, "Even trolls online have said they don't want it."

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who triggered the "motion to vacate" that led to former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) being ousted as speaker in October 2023, has been highly critical of Johnson's support for military aid to Ukraine. Yet when Axios asked him if thought Greene's "motion to vacate" against Johnson would come up for a full House vote, the ultra-MAGA congressman said he "hopes not."

Brufke reports, "A sizable number of GOP lawmakers cast doubt on the odds of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) pulling the trigger on her motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), with some arguing her efforts lost momentum after members went home for recess. Why it matters: Greene told reporters she felt members would hear from constituents back home in support of her motion shortly before House lawmakers left town. But multiple members said GOP voters have largely been against another speaker ouster attempt this Congress."
