MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough denounces ‘send her back’ taunts as ‘fascist chants’ reminiscent of the Nuremberg Rallies

When President Donald Trump told four congresswomen of color (three of whom were born in the U.S.) over the weekend to return to the countries they came from, it was obviously a rally-the-base strategy. And that base was seriously fired up at a rally in North Carolina this week when Trump reiterated his assertion that Rep. Ilhan Omar should leave the U.S. and the crowd broke out into chants of “Send her back, send her back.” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, one of Trump’s most outspoken critics on the right, found those chants horrifying — and the “Morning Joe” host equated them with the Nuremberg rallies of the 1930s during Friday’s broadcast.
“These sounded like fascists chants,” the former GOP congressman told co-host Mika Brzezinski and several guests, explaining that chants of “send her back” aimed at Omar (who is originally from Somalia but has been a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2000) recall assertions at the Nuremberg Rallies when German citizens were told to leave the country by supporters of Adolf Hitler.
“It’s frightening,” Scarborough said of the “send her back” chants among Trump supporters. “It’s undemocratic. It goes against all our American traditions.”
Scarborough went on to lambast Republicans in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives who are too cowardly to speak out against the overt racism of Trump and some of his supporters, asserting that the message of the “send her back” chants is that “this is a white nation.”
The “Morning Joe” conservative cited Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina as one of the GOP cowards who is afraid to call out Trump’s racism and declared, “Thom Tillis is nothing more than a stooge for Donald Trump.”
Trump, Scarborough stressed, has created a climate of “ethnic cleansing politically” in the U.S.
The Nuremberg Rallies were Nazi propaganda events held in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s during the Weimar Republic as well as after Adolf Hitler seized power.
