'Where momentum goes to die': Analyst explains why DeSantis was the 'clear loser' of GOP debate

YouTube host and MSNBC contributor Brian Tyler Cohen offered his thoughts Thursday on the 2024 Republican presidential candidates' individual performances during the Wednesday, September 27 GOP debate in Arizona.

MSNBC's The ReidOut host Joy Reid asked Cohen who he thought was the "clear loser" out of ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, ex-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, ex-Vice President Mike Pence, United States Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

"I feel like all of us [are the clear losers]" Cohen replied. "But if we have to get specific, I would probably say [Florida Governor] Ron DeSantis. Because momentum is everything in these campaigns. Desantis is anti-momentum. Ron DeSantis is where momentum goes to die. His job here, coming into the debate after months of watching's poll numbers continue to descend lower and lower was to commandeer some moment to recover that momentum, and he failed to do that. So he failed in doing his only job and it's clear that his poll numbers will continue to drop after this. So, yeah, I would say, given what his job is supposed to be coming into this debate, he did fail."

The Atlantic's John Hendrickson notes, "Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, once seen as [ex-President Donald] Trump's closest rival, stood center stage but spent most of the night struggling to connect as all of the candidates intermittently talked over one another."
