'We are very scared': Palestinian writer explains Israel's 'forced ethnic displacement' in powerful clip

This week, Jerusalem has experienced more clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians. Mohammed El-Kurd, a Palestinian writer, discussed the recent violence during a CNN appearance on Tuesday — and explained why he disagrees with the word "eviction" being used to describe Palestinians being removed by force from places where they have been living.

El-Kurd, who said he is being forced from his family home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem, told CNN, "It's not really eviction. It's forced ethnic displacement, to be accurate, because an eviction implies legal authority — while the Israeli occupation has no legitimate jurisdiction over the eastern parts of Occupied Jerusalem under international law. It also implies the presence of a landlord, and certainly, these Israeli settlers have not built our homes. They're not our landlords. "

El-Kurd continued, "Eviction does not imply the hundreds and hundreds of heavily armed police and army and settlers colluding, blowing off your doors, throwing your children from your windows — and using brute force to force you into the street, and arrest you should you resist…. It's not an eviction…. The situation is pretty tense, I can tell you. And we are very scared about losing our homes to Israeli settler organizations."
