'Almost elder abuse': GOP insider stunned by humiliating McConnell video

On Tuesday, a prominent conservative revealed his thoughts on Senator Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) mysterious absence and return to Congress. According to Charlie Sykes – a longtime political commentator who broke with the Republican Party over its embrace of President Donald Trump – the fact that the GOP has decided to trot out a visibly infirm McConnell to partisan political ends amounts to “elder abuse.”

Sykes was speaking with Washington Sun columnist Matt Lewis, who brought up McConnell’s return to Congress after his hospitalization in June. During his absence, rumors swirled regarding his condition, with some suggesting he’d died. Then when he appeared before cameras on Monday, pushed in a wheelchair and speaking very little, questions about his health were only renewed. The rumor mill was not quieted by reports that journalists were banned from recording him on video, which prompted many to suggest that his condition may be worse than his allies would like to project. As Lewis noted, “It was not good based on the video that I saw.”

“It looks like they're just going to wheel him out in emergency situations when they absolutely need his vote,” agreed Sykes. “The compassionate response to seeing Mitch McConnell is, oh, no, let him retire. This is almost elder abuse. Let's not humiliate him. Let's not put him in these positions. Is he going to end up dying on the floor of the Senate?”

This isn’t the first time it’s been suggested that Republicans have pushed McConnell’s return to Congress to deliver key votes despite his suffering health. In 2023, a fall resulted in a concussion and fractured rib, and a series of prolonged, on-camera incidents over the past several years in which he appeared to freeze and lose the ability to speak prompted widespread alarm about his fitness for office, sparking debate about congressional term limits.

During his latest recovery, McConnell has missed over 60 recorded roll-call votes and several high-profile events, including the death and funeral of his decades-long colleague Lindsey Graham. Now that he’s back in the public eye, videos of him staring and seemingly unresponsive have drawn skepticism toward his fitness to serve. “A blank stare and an open mouth,” noted one popular MAGA account. “There is nothing normal about his condition.”

According to Sykes, Republicans should do the “compassionate thing” and leave the Senator to tend to his health. “Why would you even put him through all of this?” asked Sykes. “The more outrageous thing is, don't the people of Kentucky actually deserve, number one, someone who will represent them, and number two, don't the voters deserve a little bit more transparency?”
