Mike Pompeo refers to 2020 election aftermath as 'peaceful transition of power': report

In an interview with Sky News, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asserted that January 6, 2021 displayed a "peaceful transition of power" between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden, NBC reports.

According to NBC, the Sky News reporter interviewing Pompeo asked the former CIA director if he "felt ashamed" of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol considering he failed to detail his account of the attack in his upcoming book, “Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love,” which encompasses Pompeo’s time working under Trump.

Pompeo contended that his book focuses on how we delivered security abroad.” He asserted that Jan. 6 was "a bad day," while simultaneously hailing it as “peaceful."

"It’s terrible when folks commit these kinds of acts of violence, and I hope they’ll be prosecuted appropriately for doing that," Pompeo said. "But make no mistake about it, that night America also showed its strength. Vice President Pence finished the election. We had a peaceful transition of power."

Additionally, when asked about his commentary during a November 2020 Fox News interview — days after the election — where he claimed there would be "a smooth transition to a second Trump administration," Pompeo said his "remarks were taken out of context."

“To read the whole statement I made that day, I spoke decently about the United States of America,” he said. “And I don’t describe it as being stolen. But there are lots of anomalies in our election. And we can’t have that in the United States."
