Watch: Mike Pence torches Kevin McCarthy's threat to end aid to Ukraine if Republicans retake the House

Former Vice President Mike Pence broke with House Republicans during a Wednesday appearance on Fox News over the United States' ongoing materiel support for war-torn Ukraine as the young democracy defends itself against Russian President Vladimir Putin's unprovoked invasion.

Host John Roberts recalled to Pence that "House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy [R-California], who wants to become the next Speaker of the House, has said if Republicans take the gavel, that America will no longer be a 'blank check' for the war in Ukraine," and then asked, "do you take issue with that?”

Pence indicated that he does. After letting out a lengthy sigh, the ex-Indiana governor and GOP congressman explained why he believes that aiding Ukraine is a worthwhile effort.

"You know, the United States throughout our history has understood that we need to be the leader of the free world. That includes being the arsenal of democracy," said Pence. "And in the days of Ronald Reagan, we understood the value of confronting the Russians and communism in the world, not necessarily by fighting them directly but by making sure the people that were fighting the communists – whether in our hemisphere or other places around the world – had the resources that they need."

He added that "I think this is such a fight."
