Mike Johnson suffers 'another setback' as 19 House Republicans block debate on new funding bill

Hoping to avoid a federal government shutdown, far-right Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and House Democrats reached a bipartisan stopgap funding agreement that, on Tuesday, November 14, passed 336-95. And the measure went to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

But the following day, things didn't go as well for Johnson when, according to reporter Jamie Dupree, House Republicans prevented a different funding bill from being debated.

Dupree tweeted, "Wow. Another setback for Speaker Johnson as GOP blocks debate on another government funding bill."

When Dupree posted that tweet, the House vote was 198 "yea" and 225 "nay." The bill enjoyed support from 206 Democrats, but among Republicans, the vote was 198 "yea" to 19 "nay."

More Republicans than not voted for it, but the 19 GOP defectors prevented debate on the bill from moving forward.

In a separate November 15 tweet, Dupree explained, "I can't emphasize enough how bad this is for House Republicans & Speaker Johnson. 2 funding bills last week couldn't get to a final vote. 2 funding bills this week are in also in trouble. How will the GOP pass much of anything for the Jan. 19 and Feb. 2 shutdown dates?"
