Dems hope to retake the House in 2024 by exposing Mike Johnson’s 'extreme' positions: report

Unlike Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) or Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) isn't known for being flamboyant, boisterous or theatrical. Johnson has a much calmer disposition, and he has even been described as "soft-spoken."

But from a policy standpoint, Johnson is no moderate. The new House speaker, dubbed "MAGA Mike" by Democrats, is a far-right Christian nationalist and a staunch Donald Trump loyalist who tried to help overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

In an article published by NPR's website on November 9, reporters Deirdre Walsh and Vincent Acovino stress that Democratic leaders plan to use Johnson's far-right history against Republicans in 2024 as part of their quest to retake the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene (R-Washington State) told NPR, "While he may be unknown to folks, I think a lot is coming out every day about where he stands and how extreme he is. You know, as someone who wanted to overturn the 2020 election, someone wants to see a nationwide abortion ban, someone who wants to cut Social Security and Medicare."

According to DelBene, the fact that GOP votes to confirm Johnson as speaker were unanimous could be a major liability for House Republicans in 2024 — especially those in swing districts.

DelBene told NPR, "The fact that every single House Republican supported him, it was unanimous, kind of says that they are OK with someone with these points of view representing them as the leader of their party in the House and frankly, as a leader of their party across the country."
