Far-right Republican who wanted to put reporters in 'gulags' could be Trump’s AG

Many critics of 2024 GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump have been warning that if he defeats his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, in November, his second administration will be much more extreme than his first.

Trump famously clashed with many traditional conservatives when he was president, from former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to ex-White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly.

But a second Trump Administration, according to critics, would only include ultra-MAGA loyalists. And far-right attorney Mike Davis is one of the people those critics are worried about.

Davis, reportedly a strong contender for U.S. attorney general if Trump wins, is known for making extreme statements and trolling Democrats as well as traditional establishment conservatives. The attorney's defenders claim that he shouldn't always be taken seriously, but critics find him disturbing nonetheless.

Politicos' Adam Wren takes an in-depth look at Davis in an article published on September 20.

Davis has called for "mass incarceration," putting "kids in cages" and imprisoning reporters in gulags.

Former MNSBC host Mehdi Hasan has said of the attorney, "Mike Davis is exactly what the Trump Administration lacked last time around: a skilled, even competent veteran of Beltway legal politics and right-wing causes, one who seems keen to transform Trump’s darkest fascist impulses into an actual policy agenda. He's a microcosm of the mainstream GOP establishment's move to the far right in the age of Trump."

Wren notes that with Davis, "the trolling is so constant that the line between what’s reality and what’s a joke, or provocation, isn’t always clear."

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Will Bunch has said of Davis, "This ambitious right-wing lawyer may or may not be a true believer, but he knows how to audition for Trump. And it's working."
