Ex-Trump lawyer vows to seek political asylum in another country if he wins in 2024: 'I fear for my life'

When New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu — a conservative Republican and outspoken Donald Trump critic — appeared at the Texas Tribune Festival in September, he was dismissive of warnings that Trump will turn the United States into an authoritarian dictatorship if he wins the 2024 GOP presidential election. Sununu told the crowd, "Trump's too dumb to be a danger to democracy. Let's not give him that much credit."

But Michael Cohen has a totally different viewpoint.

During an appearance on ITV's U.K.-oriented show "Good Morning, Britain," Trump's former personal attorney and fixer said he will leave the United States and seek political asylum in another country if Trump wins the 2024 GOP presidential nomination and defeats President Joe Biden in the general election.

Cohen told ITV, "This could be a real problem, not only again for us, but also, for America's democracy and the future of this country… I will leave the country."

During a Saturday, November 11 campaign speech in New Hampshire, Trump vowed to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical-left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, that lie and steal and cheat on elections." Many critics have compared Trump's rhetoric to the type of thing Benito "Il Duce" Mussolini would have said in Italy during the 1920s or 1930s.

Cohen is warning that such rhetoric needs to be taken seriously.

The former Trump loyalist turned scathing critic told ITV, "He will exact revenge on anyone who has done him wrong. There's a lot of people on that list."

Cohen continued, "It's not just me. It's judges, it's lawyers, it's citizens. It's prosecutors. It's Congress members. He will exact revenge on anyone and everyone that he's capable of."

When ITV asked Cohen if he would seek political asylum outside the U.S. if Trump wins in 2024, he said he "absolutely" would.

Cohen told ITV, "I fear for my safety. I fear for my life. Again, you don't know Donald Trump. I do. And don't listen to my words — listen to his words."
