Michael Avenatti Says He's 'Exploring' a Run for President Against Trump

Michael Avenatti, a lawyer known for opposing President Donald Trump in multiple lawsuits, announced Thursday that he's "exploring a run for the presidency of the United States," according to a new report from the Des Moines Register.

He made the announcement in — where else? — Iowa. 

"I wanted to come to Iowa and listen to people and learn about some issues that are facing the citizens of Iowa and do my homework," he told the paper.

According to the report, Avenatti will be speaking at the Democratic Wing Ding fundraiser on Friday night.

"I would like to think people would take me seriously," he said. "And I think, hopefully, the message that I deliver tomorrow night will be well received by Iowa Democrats."

Avenatti first gained prominence representing Stephanie Clifford (better known as an adult film star Stormy Daniels) in her case against the president seeking to break a hush money agreement she signed to keep quiet about an affair she says she had with Trump. He became a frequent guest on cable news shows and took on other high-profile cases in opposition to Trump, including those of immigrants harmed by the administration's family separation policy.

Throughout his ascent to national fame, many speculated that Avenatti might have his own motivations for elevating his image beyond merely pushing for the best interests of his clients. Now, he has made his aspirations perfectly clear.
