Following an accident Saturday night in which a Mexican Navy sailing vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, supporters of President Donald Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement flooded social media with racist commentary.
The accident claimed the lives of two crew members who fell from the ship's masts and left around 20 others injured.
Right-wing influencer Benny Johnson wrote on the social platform X: “In an absolutely stunning modern metaphor a ship blaring Mexican music and flying a massive Mexican flag just got destroyed by the Brooklyn bridge."

“Can’t make it up,” Johnson added.
Responding to his post, MAGA influencer and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer said: “They sent their tired, their poor, and their huddled masts,” a comment.
“Nailed it,," Johnson replied. However, many social media users criticized the insensitive comments.
"This is the Mexican Navy training ship fyi just so you understand why the Mexican flag is there. The comments are disgusting. People got hurt. These are Navy Cadets that are traveling to gain experience. Reading is fundamental. The ship lost power," wrote one user.
"Hopefully every Latino voter is noticing how gleeful MAGA mouthpieces are for the accidental deaths of 2 young Mexicans (who aren't criminals or illegals, etc, or even immigrants at all). They HATE you," wrote another.
"It was a Mexican Navy training vessel. Your attempt at humor is despicable in light of the obvious damage to the vessel, possible damage to the bridge and reports of multiple serious injuries," said another post in response to Loomer's comments.
Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board announced Sunday it was dispatching a specialized investigative team to examine the scene of the collision. Critical details about what led to the incident may be uncovered through the ship’s voyage data recorder.
The vessel, named Cuauhtémoc, was carrying 277 people and heading to Iceland when it reportedly lost power and crashed into the bridge, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D).
A senior city official familiar with the inquiry told CNN that the ship was traveling in the wrong direction at the time of the incident.
