Merrick Garland files motion to unseal Mar-a-Lago search warrant request that he 'personally approved'

United States Attorney General Merrick Garland told the nation on Thursday that he "personally approved" the Department of Justice's request for a search warrant of former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida on Monday.

Garland also revealed that the Justice Department has filed a motion in the Southern District of Florida to unseal the warrant and the property receipt of the items – 15 boxes of allegedly classified materials that were removed from the White House during the waning days of Trump's term – that the Federal Bureau of Investigation confiscated from Trump's seaside compound.

Garland noted that this action was partially a result of Trump announcing the "raid" in a Truth Social rant late Monday afternoon.

"Federal law, longstanding department rules, and our ethical obligations prevent me from providing further details as to the basis of the search at this time," Garland said.
