Journalist Michael Wolff said there’s a reason photos of First Lady Melania Trump aren’t prevalent among the White House press corps, and he remains confused why nobody is admitting why.
“The Melania story is head-smacking. It is the most obvious. It is right there in front of our faces, and no one can quite find the language to express it,” said Wolff, speaking to Daily Beast Podcast Host Joanna Coles.
“Well, the story appears to be she’s just not there, right?” asked Coles. “She turns up for the Easter egg roll. She turns up for the inauguration, and there’s clearly no physical affection between them. Is that what you mean, or does she have a whole separate life with someone else?”

“Let’s proceed from the fact that they clearly do not in any way inhabit a marriage as we define marriage,“ said Wolff, a columnist and contributor to USA Today. ”And I think maybe we can more specifically say they live separate lives. They are separated. The president of the United States and the first lady are separated. That’s a huge headline. No one will say it in that way."
Wolff is a best-selling author of books on Trump, including 2018’s Fire & Fury, and All Or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America, published this year. Trump does not approve of his work, calling Wolff a fraud, and worse. But Wolff suggested nobody needs a deep researcher to see what’s already clear.
“Here’s a marriage, and the principles are estranged. They don’t speak to each other. They’re separated. The marriage is crumbling,” Wolff said.

“But they didn’t go and say, ‘This is obviously a marriage in trouble,’” Wolff said. “The American public has been sold a bill of goods here that, you know, Donald Trump and his glamorous wife, that runs entirely counter to all of the facts here, including the fact that they don’t spend any time together.”
Wolff acknowledged that when America’s First Lady goes to the White House she is treated as a visitor, not a resident, and he pointed out that the American public inconsistently can’t wait to hear news of the marriage between Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama dissolving.
“That [Obama] story lurks all over the internet. We can’t yet say it but we’re on the edge of our seats ready to say it — when you could [already] be saying it about Trump.”
