House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) suggested on Monday that the House of Representatives might consider impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Merrick Garland over unsubstantiated allegations from a whistleblower at the Internal Revenue Service regarding Hunter Biden.

“If it comes true what the IRS whistleblower is saying, we’re going to start impeachment inquiries on the Attorney General," McCarthy told the hosts of "Fox & Friends."

This comes after McCarthy made a similar impeachment threat on Sunday if David Weiss, the Trump-appointed prosecutor who brokered a plea agreement with Hunter Biden over late taxes and improperly obtaining a firearm, is not allowed to testify to Congress.

The agreement, which could subject the president's son to probation, was the culmination of years of investigation, and is unusual in that most people accused of similar offenses are rarely prosecuted as standalone crimes; tax charges in particular are highly unusual if the unpaid taxes were already paid back.

However, Republicans have complained the charges don't go far enough. House investigators have for years pushed an unfounded claim that Hunter Biden accepted bribes from foreign governments, and that President Joe Biden, then the vice president, was in on the scheme.

The House Ways and Means Committee further alleged last week that a whistleblower at the IRS has alleged the Justice Department under Garland interfered with Weiss' investigation; however, House investigators have not put forward any evidence supporting this claim, and Weiss himself has not made any such allegation against Garland.
