'Have you no decency?' GOP chair abruptly ends hearing after Dem rep stands up for colleague

Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Delaware), the first openly transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has been the target of GOP lawmakers ranging from Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) to Rep. Mary E. Miller (R-lllinois). Now, Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) is a drawing criticism from a Democratic Massachusetts lawmaker for a comment about McBride.

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday, March 11, Self said, "I now recognize the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride" — to which McBride sarcastically responded, "Thank you, Madam Chair."

Rep. Bill Keating (D-Massachusetts) rushed to McBride's defense. And while McBride responded to Self with sarcasm, Keating was more forceful.

"This is not decent," the Massachusetts Democrat told Self.

Self also said of the Texas lawmaker, "Mr. Chairman, you are out of order. Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I've come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent."

When Self said, "We will continue this hearing," Keating angrily responded, "You will not continue it with me, unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way."

Self then banged his gavel, declaring, "This hearing is adjourned."
