Mary Trump, the niece of President Donald Trump, has long been an outspoken critic of her uncle and his politics, but in a recent interview with The Rest Is Politics, she called out his latest turn as "one of the most despicable things" he has done yet.
Sitting for an interview with the political podcast, Mary Trump was pressed for her take on the president's slew of recent pro-Russia moves, from setting up a deal to purchase Russian diesel to exempting the country from new economic sanctions to renewing attacks on Ukraine. She suggested that all of these things are happening now as a result of her uncle's skill for "softening the ground" to make unpalatable ideas acceptable.
"The reason this is happening now is because one of the few things Donald is good at is softening the ground, making the unacceptable acceptable over time," she explained. "So, during his first term, he was talking to police cadets and saying, 'Hey, you know, when you have a suspect and you're putting him in the back of the police car, don't worry if he hits his head.' And now we have ICE agents, you know, a government agency murdering American citizens in the streets and nothing's happening. Now we're in a war of choice against a country that didn't provoke us. Now we are abandoning our democratic ally so Donald can enrich himself with this deal with Russia. So it just gets people used to things."
She also argued that the president enjoys using his power to "humiliate" allied countries, because in a way, it makes him feel like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping or Kim Jong-un. He is "jealous" of powerful figures like them and wants to make himself feel like he has a similar "president for life" status.
The president's "obscene betrayal of Ukraine," she argued, was among the worst things she has ever seen from him, and makes it clear that her uncle is on the side of global fascism.
"Last week was one of the most despicable things I've ever seen in my life," Mary Trump added. "His betrayal of Ukraine is just obscene. And I think from the beginning, and we knew, we had hints of this during his first term, he wants to leave NATO. He wouldn't care if NATO were dismantled. And he has no interest in the great Western liberal alliance that was created in the wake of World War II because now he's on the side of the fascist."
She added: "You can argue that the Republican Party in America is a fascist party that has no interest — he certainly has no interest — in democracy. He thinks that people who engage in things like statecraft and diplomacy and who are, you know, in alliances that require compromise are losers."
