Manafort charged in New York with 16 state felony charges — which could force him to serve prison time even with a Trump pardon

The hits just keep on coming for former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Moments after Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who serves on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, sentenced Manafort to an additional 3.5 years in prison (bringing his total up to 90 months), the Manhattan District Attorney's Office indicted him on 16 state felony charges.

Last week, Judge T.S. Ellis of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, sentenced Manafort to 4 years in prison, and blasted federal prosecutors for recommending a sentence of 19 to 25 years.

"Clearly the guidelines were way out of whack on this, as the history of the sentences in this area show," Judge Ellis said Thursday. "It's a fundamental principle of justice that like cases should be treated alike, and if they're treated differently, there ought to be a good reason for it."

If convicted on state charges, Manafort could still face jail time, even if Trump pardons him.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday said the president will decide "when he's ready" whether to pardon Manafort.
