MAGA influencers turn on Kavanaugh: 'The death of America is on him'

When it seemed as if the Supreme Court would help President Donald Trump use the post office to deny mail-in ballots to Democratic voters, Republicans were pleased. Now that America's highest bench on Monday ruled 7 to 2 that Trump cannot in fact legally do this — only Republican Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented — many MAGA supporters feel betrayed by the same bench that has otherwise overwhelmingly sided with their president.

"Kavanaugh is a compromised --- and the death of America is on him, this is total -- and EVERYONE KNOWS IT," an account called Fed Up American posted on X on Monday. "We will never trust any judges or Supreme Court it's totally corrupt. How dare that loser try and destroy our country!!! We want lol find justice"

"BREAKING: The Supreme Court just BLOCKED President Trump from implementing his landmark US Postal Service mail-in ballot election security rules, a MAJOR LOSS ahead of the midterms," conservative journalist Eric Daugherty proclaimed.

"Kavanaugh says in the ruling IT'S TOO LATE FOR THE MIDTERMS. Absolute PATRIOTS Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito dissent." Posting an American flag, the influencer described the decision as "un-freaking-believable!! ROGUE JUDGES have succeeded in holding this policy up until last mintue. Looks like the USPS security attempts before the midterms are done, aside from DOJ surging monitors to make sure there is no foul play. SCOTUS: 'The Government is unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the District Court's preliminary injunction. And the equitable factors applicable for obtaining emergency relief from this Court do not favor a stay.' KAVANAUGH: 'Applying the rule in the 2026 elections would be arbitrary and capricious in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act because state and local election officials do not have sufficient time to reasonably implement the rule before the elections.'"

An account called The Patriot Oasis argued "Congress MUST PASS THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!"

"Lots of people have done damage to this country," Christian right-winger Jared Tenney argued. "But whoever Trump was listening to when he appointed Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett is certainly climbing to the top of the list."

Students for Trump founder Ryan Fournier complained that the decision was "UNBELIEVABLE. SCOTUS just blocked Trump's USPS election security rules right before the midterms!" He added that "Kavanaugh claims it's 'too late' to implement. Massive respect to Thomas and Alito for standing strong and dissenting." After posting an American flag, he concluded that "rogue judges delayed this on purpose. We need DOJ monitors now!" —

Trump supporter SarahAnnRhoades said that "it's crystal clear that SCOTUS justices Roberts, Barrett, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Jackson, Kagan and Sotomayor all are trying to help the Dems in the midterms."

If Trump had prevailed with the Supreme Court, then the Justice Department would have been required to cross-reference mail-in ballots against a federal database of permitted voters and barred from sending ballots to anyone not on the list.

In their August filing, the White House argued that “the Postal Service has likewise relied on the same statutory authorities at issue here to adopt special handling and conditions on acceptance for other types of mail that are similarly sensitive yet non-dangerous, raising unique operational concerns—such as cremated remains or replica explosives. There is no material distinction between those prior actions and this one with respect to the legal authority of the Postal Service.”

Speaking with AlterNet in June, one election expert pointed out that even though Trump's attempt to throttle mail-in voting has failed, he still may succeed in discouraging many people from casting a ballot.

“I think there are two things to consider,” Pooja Chaudhuri, Senior Counsel/Deputy Legal Director at Democracy Defenders Fund who specializes in voting rights as well as election law litigation and advocacy, told AlterNet at the time. “One is that the election is made up of voters, and so the outcome depends on people turning out to the polls and voting. The problem is ... the chilling effect on voters.”

Chaudhuri continued, “When voters hear that ICE may be deployed to the polls, that mail-in voting rules are changing close to the election, a lot of voters might say, ‘I'm just not going to go out and vote.’ That could happen in many different ways. There are vulnerable communities — people may come from mixed-status families — they're US citizens, but they might decide, "I'm not going to vote." So one aspect is the chilling effect on voters that all of these actions would have.”
