'Let them eat crudité': Dr. Oz suffers brutal mockery when shopping video misfires

In an effort to disparage President Joe Biden and other Democrats, Dr. Mehmet Oz made a shopping video in a pricy Pennsylvania supermarket — claiming that Biden was to blame for the inflated prices. But according to Oz’s detractors, the video misfired badly.

The video shows Oz, the GOP nominee in Pennsylvania’s 2022 U.S. Senate race, explaining, “My wife wants some vegetables, some crudité.” And he goes on to get some broccoli, asparagus, carrots, guacamole and salsa, complaining, “Guys, that’s 20 dollars for crudité, and this doesn’t include the tequila. I mean, that’s outrageous. We’ve got Joe Biden to thank for this.”

It didn’t take Oz’s detractors long to start mocking and ridiculing Oz’s video. The point of the video was obviously to convince Pennsylvania voters that economically, he feels their pain. But according to Oz’s critics, he came across as a privileged, out-of-touch yuppie.

Never Trump conservative Ana Navarro, on August 15, sarcastically tweeted, “Nothing says I’m relatable, like referring to a veggie platter and dip, as #crudités. I can’t wait for the next video: Make a Charcuterie Board with Dr. Oz.” Veteran television journalist Dan Rather tweeted, “Trying to bond with voters by shopping for crudités isn't very erudités.” And Twitter user Denise Howell, @deniseinmc, wrote, “And blaming President Biden for the price of broccoli! Forgetting, of course, that inflation is currently hitting the entire world. I guess it's a little hard for Republicans to blame Vladimir Putin - he's more their friend that US government patriots.”

But some of the most biting mockery came from the Democratic nominee in Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race: Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who has been fundraising off of Oz’s video. On August 15, Fetterman — who has been leading in polls — tweeted, “To honor Dr. Oz’s love for crudité and Wegners (and also because it’s my birthday) we’re launching this NEW limited edition sticker.... Make a donation of any amount + it’s all yours....Because it's actually just a veggie tray.”

Fetterman also mocked Oz for not getting the name of the store right. Oz moved to the Philadelphia suburbs from New Jersey to run for the U.S. Senate seat presently held by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, and to his detractors, that is a reminder that he isn’t a true Pennsylvanian.

Newsweek’s Darragh Roche reports, “The new fundraising effort comes after an Oz campaign video from earlier this year became the focus of renewed attention on Monday. In that video, Oz appeared to mix up the names of grocery chains Radner's and Wegmans and said that he was shopping at ‘Wegners.’ Oz, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, also mentioned shopping for crudités — a plate of vegetables often served with sauces — during the campaign video, eliciting ridicule from Fetterman…. The sticker features a logo for the non-existent grocery store ‘Wegners’ and the slogan ‘Let Them Eat Crudité.’"
