Muslim Republicans increasingly frustrated by Michigan GOP’s 'strong push toward Christian nationalism'

When Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer enjoyed a double-digit reelection victory over far-right MAGA Republican challenger Tudor Dixon, the state GOP didn't move closer to the center. Instead, it kept moving even more to the right, calling for severe abortion restrictions and embracing the ideology of fundamentalist Christian nationalism.

Kristina Karamo, a far-right Christian nationalist and MAGA conspiracy theorist, now chairs the Michigan GOP. And according to MLive reporter Simon Schuster, Christian nationalism is a problem for Muslim Republicans in her state.

Hassan Nehme, a Michigan GOP vice-chair who is Muslim, told MLive, "The people elected three Muslim vice-chairs, but you have a chair that refuses to acknowledge us because she wants to push the image of this Christian-only party…. I would say there's definitely a strong push toward Christian nationalism. We feel like we're in a club where we're not really welcome."

Ali Hossein, the Michigan GOP's administrative vice-chair and a Muslim, also believes that an emphasis on Christian nationalism isn't serving the state's Republicans well.

Hossein told MLive, "They're not taking advantage of that diversity. They're doing the opposite."
