Trump tells embattled loyalist to quit amid embarrassing scandals

On Tuesday, following accusations of corruption, it was reported that President Donald Trump has asked embattled U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign.

This was announced by the new White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, who said simply, "We have asked the ambassador to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."The news follows reports that Trump was "not happy" and "looking at" firing Guilfoyle.

As MS NOW explains, "Guilfoyle, the former fiancee of Donald Trump Jr., has faced scrutiny after The Wall Street Journal reported in September about her 'persistent promotion' of a Greek energy company as part of a U.S. push to create a 'vertical gas corridor' that routes American natural gas from Greece to Ukraine. The Journal reported that Guilfoyle has close ties to a lobbyist for the company, who often accompanies her to high-level energy meetings without disclosing his ties to the firm."

But that was just the beginning of her downfall.Last week, it was also revealed that she had begged a top Republican donor to pay for her credit card bill, asserting that she would exchange access to senior administration officials.

As CBS reports, "The donor, Eric Deters, said last week that Ms. Guilfoyle had asked him to wire $100,000 to pay off her American Express card just before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. She promised to serve as his 'ride or die in Trump world' if he did, according to what appeared to be screenshots of their correspondence that Mr. Deters provided to The New York Times. 'Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,' she wrote in what appeared to be a text message. The texts suggest that Ms. Guilfoyle warned Mr. Deters to call her on Signal and to keep their interactions private. 'You’ll literally cost me my ambassadorship,' she wrote, according to one of the screenshots."

Deters characterized her request as "pay to play," explaining that he had sought help from Guilfoyle with access to Trump administration officials, including the attorney general and IRS commissioner.

White House officials were told that the text messages between Guilfoyle and Deters were authentic, prompting an unusually immediate response from the administration. According to recent polls, a record high 89 percent of Americans view government corruption as a widespread problem, 53 percent say "corrupt" is the top word to describe Trump, and 49 percent say corruption is a top consideration in the midterms.
