Lawmaker vows 'strong resistance' if Musk agency recommends Social Security or Medicare cuts

President-elect Donald Trump has proposed a new government agency that would be called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and would be headed by Elon Musk — CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) — and MAGA businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

If created, the goal of the agency, according to Trump, would be reducing government waste.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) discussed Trump's DOGE proposal during a Monday morning, November 25 appearance on CNN. And the Democratic congressman stressed that DOGE will "face strong resistance" if it recommends Social Security of Medicare cuts.

CNN's Jim Acosta asked Khanna if two people "from outside government," Musk and Ramaswamy, should have "sway over what stays and what goes in the federal government."

Khanna responded, "Ultimately, they're going to provide recommendations. It's Congress that appropriates money."

Khanna added that if Musk and Ramaswamy have defense-related "recommendations," that "could be supported."

"If they find areas of truly wasteful spending across the government," Khanna told Acosta, "they would get support. But if they start to recommend cuts in Social Security or Medicare or Title 1 education funding, they'll face strong resistance. It really just depends what they recommend."
