'Kevin wants payback': Nancy Mace faces 'potent challenges' in tough GOP primary battle
12 February 2024
Conservative Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) is seeking a third term in 2024, but according to The Hill's Caroline Vakil, she is facing a top GOP primary battle that could keep her from making it to the general election.
One of her problems, Vakil reports in an article published on February 12, is the wrath of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-California) supporters. Mace was among the Republicans who joined Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) in voting to oust McCarthy as speaker.
Gaetz told The Hill, "Kevin wants payback for being removed, and the fiction there is that he's going to fare better in the Lowcountry of South Carolina than he fared on his home turf in Washington, D.C."

Another problem Mace is up against, according to critics, is her record of flip-flopping. Mace was critical of former President Donald Trump after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, but now, she is stridently endorsing him over former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the GOP presidential primary.
Alex Stroman, former executive director of the South Carolina Republican Party, told The Hill, "I don't know if South Carolinians, those of us who reside in the Lowcountry, know what she's for, who she's for, or who she's against, depending on the day — and then, I really don't think that she does. Nancy Mace, I think, is finding out that if you're a weathervane, and.… you're not consistent from Monday to Tuesday to Wednesday, then voters are going to respond accordingly and maybe look for other options and look for consistency."
