Trump-backed Kentucky AG welcomed donation from community center his office is probing: report

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron received a $6,900 donation from an addiction resource and recovery center his office is currently probing, according to records obtained by The Daily Beast.

Per The Beast, the attorney general and 2024 gubernatorial candidate failed to recuse himself from the investigation "run by Kentucky's Office of Medicaid Fraud and Abuse, a division of the Office of Attorney General," until "after his office received a May 17 request for a list of his recusals," and "one week after" he instructed a Kentucky judge to recuse from a case for a similar reason.

Cameron found the "judge had accepted a campaign contribution of $250 from an attorney in a case before him," according to the report, to which he responded, "These facts, individually and together, could cause a reasonable observer to question the impartiality or bias of the presiding judge."

The Beast notes, not only was the judge criticized for the donation, but "he had also 'liked' a political post on Facebook in support of Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear."

Regarding the attorney general's predicament, the news outlet adds, "Despite the donations, Cameron did not recuse himself from that investigation before he attacked the judge. Instead, he waited until an open records request threatened to reveal the existence of that investigation, personally withdrawing from the case two days after the request came in."

Furthermore, the recusal, which the AG's office blamed on "an abundance of caution," came three days after Cameron won the GOP primary, which the donations" from Edgewater'sowner, general counsel, and medical, human resources, and clinical practices directors "were designated to support."

The full timeline of events raises questions about Cameron's conflict of interest, what he knew, and when. It will also almost certainly add fuel to bipartisan accusations that the outspoken, politically polarizing, Trump-supporting Republican has abused the power of his office during his tenure.
