U.S. President Donald Trump gestures, as he heads back to the Oval Office, on the day of the 2026 White House Easter Egg Roll, in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 6, 2026.
Newly appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia’s inaugural 14-minute press conference is still sending shockwaves to those who watched, specifically members of the media. As millions question President Donald Trump’s mental unraveling, columnist Ian Dunt says Zacharia is the new poster child for America’s intellectual crisis.
He’s not alone in his observation that Zacharia appeared ill-prepared for her debut. The View co-hosts and Jimmy Kimmel have dissected the briefing, calling into question Zacharia’s credentials and ability, and whether she was even properly vetted for the job. Taking all of this into account, coupled with Zacharia’s inability to answer what are viewed as easy questions, has Dunt and others concerned.
For starters, Dunt points to something hard to ignore: Zacharia has an aesthetic synonymous with most women who work under Trump’s leadership. She has long blonde tresses and Barbie-like makeup, but he says her words lack substance. Dunt notes that at the start of her brief, she read directly from a page, something that an amateur would do as opposed to a seasoned political figure ready to inform the public on important updates. He says much of the content spewed during her eight-minute brief was vague, with general language that it seems she memorized from the book of Trump.
What is most worrisome to Dunt is Zacharia’s inability to communicate effectively, or at all, with the media. He points out that legacy media organizations, such as the Associated Press, have been banned from the White House for not complying with Trump’s “rules.” revise: They’ve since been replaced with “new media”, a collection of approved websites the White House has used to replace old-fashioned reporters whose coverage appears to align closely with Trump as a supporter. While that would give someone in Zacharia’s position an advantage, Dunt says she even failed that test, despite having a leg up and softball questions.
When asked about whether the U.S. has stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, she didn’t answer. “I’ll have to get back to you on that,” she replied, leaving Dunt wondering what to do with that answer.
Like Dunt, many have questioned how Zacharia secured such an influential position, one of the most consequential roles in any administration, given concerns about her readiness for the job. For Dunt, the apparent lack of preparedness among some in the current administration points to a broader issue with potentially irreversible consequences for America: qualifications and expertise seem to take a back seat to personal relationships and political favoritism.
