'Why torture yourself?' Kari Lake rules out running for office again — and Trump appears to agree

After losing Arizona's 2022 gubernatorial race to Democratic now-Gov. Katie Hobbs, far-right MAGA conspiracy theorist Kari Lake angrily railed against her opponent and falsely claimed, without evidence, that the election had been stolen from her. In contrast, then-Gov. Doug Ducey, a conservative Republican, congratulated Hobbs and offered to help her with the transition.

Lake lost another statewide race in 2024 when she ran for the U.S. Senate seat presently occupied by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona). Democratic Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego, not Lake, will be taking over that seat when Sinema leaves office in January. And Trump, after Lake's loss, picked her to head the Voice of America.

When Lake spoke at Turning Point USA's four-day AmericaFest in Phoenix on Saturday, December 21, she didn't rail against Gallego nonstop. Instead, she told the crowd that she isn't planning to run for office again and said her top priority in the months ahead will be "helping" Trump.

Lake told the crowd, "We're not where we need to be on elections. And that's one of the reasons I don’t want to run again, to be honest. Why put yourself through that torture again?"

The former Barack Obama supporter turned far-right MAGA Republican also said, "I am gonna go help President Trump in Washington, D.C. That's what I'm gonna do."

Trump himself evidently agrees that Lake shouldn't run for office again.

According to Arizona Republic reporter Laura Gersony, Trump is encouraging Lake's 2022 foe Karrin Taylor Robson to run for governor in Arizona in 2026.

In 2022, Robson lost Arizona's GOP gubernatorial primary to Lake. But Trump, on December 22 at AmeriFest, said, "Karrin, are you running for governor? I think so, Karrin. Because if you do, you're going to have my support."
