GOP strategist downplays Harris’ lead over Trump 'among likely voters' in new poll: report

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll shows Kamala Harris leading over Donald Trump "among likely voters," which is now "the second major poll to put" the 2024 Democratic nominee "in the lead outside of the margin of error," according to MSNBC's Chris Jansing.

The first poll, also published by ABC News/Ispos, last month showed Harris holding a tight lead over the MAGA hopeful.

Jansing noted on Monday that the poll was published before the second assassination attempt on Trump at his Florida golf course Sunday.

Speaking with the Chris Jansing Reports host, New York Times reporter and MSNBC contributor Jeremey Peters said voters "need to be looking at the swing state polls rather than national polls," considering President Joe Biden and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton both won the popular vote.

He added, "I think what you're seeing in the swing states is that the race remains tight" despite Harris' successful debate performance last week. Still, Peters noted that Harris has had less time to garner support than Trump has.

GOP strategist Lance Trover downplayed the new polling numbers, claiming that Trump is "consistently polling better" than the vice president.

"He polls sometimes double digits higher," Trover said of Trump. "There's a lot of things the Republicans are hanging their hat on."

Peters emphasized, "Let's not forget that Kamala Harris has only had six weeks, seven weeks or so to sell herself to voters."
