'You’re not calling the shots': Johnson mocked over letting Trump influence border deal

During an interview with NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, February 4, House Speaker Mike Johnson claimed that he is not taking instruction from former President Donald Trump as he negotiates a US border deal with President Joe Biden and his democratic colleagues.

Host Kristen Welker asked the Louisiana GOP leader, "Trump says any Republican who votes for this deal should be ashamed of themselves. You said you speak to him frequently and you've discussed this deal with him 'at length.' Is Donald Trump calling the shots here Mr. Speaker?"

Johnson replied, "Of course not. He's not calling the shots. I am calling the shots for the House, that's our responsibility."

Several experts and lawmakers weren't too sold on the Speaker's response.

US Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) said, "A lesson I just shared with my team: when you have to say you’re calling the shots, you’re not calling the shots."

Longtime conservative commentator Lou Dobbs replied, "Well, I hope Mr. Speaker that you occasionally look to the will and consent of the people"

Oklahoma Democratic congressional candidate Madison Horn added, "When you feel the need to tell everyone that you're in control, it may indicate you're not actually in control."
