In his forthcoming novel, Sen. John McCain said the War in Iraq—which he played a prominent role in bringing to fruition—“can’t be judged as anything other than a mistake,” adding he has to “accept” his role in the conflict.

“[The Iraq War] can’t be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it,” McCain writes in his new memoir, The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights and Other Appreciations.

McCain—whose fighter legacy is being cemented as he battles giioblastoma, a malignant form of bran cancer—has continued making headlines even as his health continues to deteriorate.

He called on the Senate to reject Donald Trump’s CIA nominee Gina Haspel for her fault to acknowledge “torture’s immorality.” McCain also said the president, with whom he’s frequently sparred, is not welcome at his funeral.
