'He's in for quite the ride': John Eastman surrenders at Atlanta jail while facing possible disbarment

On Tuesday morning, August 21, bail bondsman Scott Hall became the first co-defendant to surrender in Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis' criminal case against former President Donald Trump. And not long after that, attorney John C. Eastman, according to the Associated Press, arrived at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta and surrendered as well.

Eastman, following the 2020 presidential election, outlined a fake electors plan to keep Trump in office despite the fact that he lost the election. In a statement Eastman gave his lawyers, the MAGA attorney attacked Willis' case as "an indictment that should never have been brought" and accused her of attacking "attorneys for their zealous advocacy on behalf of their clients."

AP's Kate Brumback notes, "The indictment alleges that Eastman and others pushed to put in place a slate of 'alternate' electors falsely certifying that Trump won and tried to pressure Pence into rejecting or delaying the counting of legitimate electoral votes for Biden, a Democrat."

X, formerly Twitter, is full of reactions to Eastman's surrender.

Former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi, a frequent guest on MSNBC, tweeted, "It's a bad day when you have to postpone your disbarment hearing to be arrested."

NPR's Tom Dreisbach, similarly, observed, "Just in: The State Bar of California’s disciplinary trial of John Eastman - which was set to resume tomorrow - has been delayed by two days, so Eastman can surrender to face criminal charges in Fulton County, Georgia. Hearings set to resume Thursday."

Dreisbach also posted, "The Eastman disciplinary trial had started earlier this summer, went long, and was put on hold for months due to scheduling issues. In the meantime, Eastman was indicted in Georgia."

Attorney Richard E. Signorelli commented, "To the new attorneys out there: Welcome to the legal profession & don't be like Eastman who needs an adjournment of his disbarment proceedings in order to be arrested/processed for a state racketeering case. Will not end well for a low life accused of subverting our democracy."

Legal reporter Meghann Cuniff remarked, "John Eastman's a busy guy, with both his state bar hearing in LA and his surrender on his Georgia criminal indictment scheduled this week. Fortunately for him, Judge Roland is accommodating. No hearing tomorrow or Wednesday so he can surrender in Georgia. Back in LA Thursday."

Marty Taylor, executive director for NewBlueUSA, said of Hall and Eastman's surrenders, "Keep 'em coming." And Los Angeles Times reporter Sarah D. Wire noted that 17 more defendants still need to surrender in Willis' case.

Activist Skyleigh Heinen described Eastman as the "mastermind of the fake electors scheme, adding, "Oh he's in for quite the ride!"
