Fact check highlights House speaker hopeful Jim Jordan’s 'vocal' support of Trump’s 2020 election lies
09 October 2023
With Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) having been ousted as House speaker, the search for a replacement is underway. And the leading contenders, so far, appear to be House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana).
If Jordan is the nominee, the Donald Trump loyalist is expected to get very few, if any, Democratic votes — which means that he will need all votes he can get from House Republicans.
In a KFile column published on October 9, CNN's Andrew Kaczynski points to Jordan as a major promotor of the Big Lie in 2020.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
"In the months leading up to and following the 2020 presidential election," Kaczynski recalls, "potential House speaker and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan prolifically pushed false stolen election rhetoric. After then-President Donald Trump lost the election to Joe Biden, Jordan urged Trump not to concede, spread conspiracy theories, supported lawsuits attempting to disqualify the legitimate results and discussed plans to object to the 2020 election results on January 6, 2021."
In May 2021, Jordan told CBS News, "I've never said this election was stolen. All I've said is, 'Let's check it out.'"
Kaczynski reports, however, that a "KFile review of his public comments and his frequent media appearances show Jordan repeatedly suggested just that."
"147 Republicans objected to the election results on January 6, 2021, but Jordan, with his constant television and radio appearances, was among the most vocal," Kaczynski explains. "Time and again, Jordan suggested Trump could not have lost because Republicans picked up seats in the House of Representatives that cycle and Trump got more votes than in 2016…. In the lead up to the election, Jordan baselessly suggested numerous times that Democrats were orchestrating a plan to steal the election — implying that COVID-19 rule changes for voting in states were part of a Democratic plot."
