'I was there': Elected Connecticut Republican charged for participating in Capitol attack

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut has charged Gino DiGiovanni, a Connecticut politician who participated in the January 6 attack on the U.S. capitol, NBC Connecticut reports.

Per NBC Connecticut, DiGiovanni "was not an alderman at the time of the riot at the U.S. Capitol but was later elected to the position. He is now running for mayor of" the city of Derby.

"I was there, I went inside there, and, you know, I didn't damage or break anything," the alderman told NBC Connecticut in October last year, according to NBC News.

NBC News reports DiGiovanni also "said last year last year that he was 'going to have to deal with that' if he got a call saying he would be charged."

He added, "I wouldn't want to be arrested for it. I guess hindsight is 20-20."

Per NBC Connecticut, the alderman "is charged with two counts of entering a restricted building, one count of disorderly conduct inside a Capitol building, and one count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing inside a Capitol building."

According to NBC News, "Online sleuths known as 'Sedition Hunters,' who have identified hundreds of participants in the Jan. 6 attack, tipped off NBC News about DiGiovanni, who was wearing a 'DiGiovanni & Sons' jacket when he entered the Capitol unmasked."

NBC News also notes, "About 1,100 defendants have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack, and more than 300 have received sentences of incarceration."
