Conservative group shelves anti-Trump ads — because they backfired: report

Although Donald Trump remains the clear frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, he is not universally loved among conservatives.

Win It Back PAC, a conservative group, recently tested some anti-Trump ads. Their message is that because of his many legal problems, Trump would be a weak nominee in 2024.

But according to Politico's Alex Isenstadt, the group has decided to shelve the ads and now believes that they would help Trump with GOP primary voters rather than hurt him.

"One spot, which was surveyed before an online panel of Republican primary voters, declared that the indictments against Trump had 'worn' him 'down' and undercut his ability to win the election," Isenstadt reports. "Another said the trials presented 'too much baggage' and warned that Democrats would 'sensationalize' them to hurt the ex-president. The hardest-hitting commercial raised the specter that Trump would be convicted, leading President Joe Biden to 'cruise' to reelection."

The Politico reporter continues, "All of the ads shared one thing in common beyond the topic on which they focused: They all failed or backfired."

According to Isenstadt, Win It Back's "behind-the-scenes deliberations around the ads underscores how Trump's legal problems have, if anything, helped — not hurt — his standing in the primary."

A Messenger/HarrisX poll released on November 1 found Trump leading Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the second-place candidate, by 50 percent among GOP primary voters. And a Quinnipiac poll released the same day showed Trump with a 49 percent lead over DeSantis.

"With the first nominating contest less than three months away," Isenstadt notes, "a swath of Republican voters is making it clear they see Trump as the victim of the legal system, not a violator of it."
