Hur’s agreement to testify revives GOP’s hope to oust Biden: report

Following Department of Justice special counsel Robert Hur resignation from his role Monday and agreement to testify before the Judiciary Committee Tuesday, March 12, House Republican members are encouraged to continue their fight to impeach President Joe Biden, Axios reports.

Hur released a special report last month announcing his decision not to bring charges against Biden over his handling of classified documents — but Hur did take aim at the president's mental acuity in the report — drawing criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.

Ex-Trump White House counsel Mark Lytle, according to USA Today, slammed "Hur's descriptions of Biden's memory as 'outrageous,' stating that DOJ prosecutors are instructed to either 'speak through charges' or not at all."

Former Attorney General Eric Holder tweeted, "Special Counsel Hur's report on Biden classified documents issues contains way too many gratuitous remarks and is flatly inconsistent with long standing DOJ traditions."

Although no evidence has been found to back right-wing lawmakers' efforts to impeach the president, GOP House members like US Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) still believes there's hope. He told Axios Hur's "position on Biden's mental state is obviously going to be front and center" during his Tuesday testimony.

Special counsel Jack Smith earlier this month submitted a court filing to Judge Aileen Cannon arguing that Hur's report proves former President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents was far worse than Biden's — considering the president cooperated with US government officials and Trump did not.

Casting doubt on the impeachment effort, far-right House member US Rep. Troy Nehls( (R-TX) told Axios, "I would impeach Joe, but we don't have the will to do it in the House. I don't even know if it goes to a floor vote. And if it did it [would] fail … we're not going to impeach Biden in my opinion."

However, Axios reports the Texas lawmaker "was candid in his he belief the hearing will damage Biden politically," saying "Oh I'm sure ... I mean, why are we going to have him there? We're going to expose what [Biden] truly said in that report. The American people need to see it."

Nehls added that Hur's testimony "should be a political win for Republicans," and that "he's 'so glad' Biden is set to be the Democratic nominee."

House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY), along with their far-right allies allege that Biden illegally profited from his son, Hunter Biden's, business dealings with Ukraine, and to back their claims, they've leaned on star witness Alexander Smirnov to help oust the president. However, Smirnov was arrested last month for allegedly lying to the FBI, which could ultimately sink the GOP's efforts.
