The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has been conducting an in-depth investigation of Hunter Biden's taxes and business activities, and the fact that he is the president's son hasn't stopped U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland from pursuing the matter.
On Tuesday morning, June 20, a court filing — according to the New York Times — showed that Hunter Biden has reached a plea deal with DOJ. The president's son, under the agreement, will plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and avoid prosecution on a gun-related charge.
Biden, the Times reports, will agree to probation for failing to pay his 2017 and 2018 taxes on time.
Times reporters Michael S. Schmidt and Adam Entous explain, "The Justice Department would charge Mr. Biden but agree not to prosecute him in connection with his purchase of a handgun in 2018 during a period when he was using drugs. The deal would be contingent on Mr. Biden remaining drug-free for 24 months and agreeing never to own a firearm again. The agreement must still be approved by a federal judge."
In an official statement, Hunter Biden's attorney Christopher Clark said, "With the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved."
