Federal prosecutor close to a decision in Hunter Biden probe: report

The word "institutionalist" has often been used to describe U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, and the centrist Democrat showed just how much of an institutionalist he is when he made it clear that he would leave federal prosecutor Andrew Weiss alone in the Hunter Biden investigation. Despite the fact that Biden is the son of the president who nominated him for attorney general, Garland has said that a decision in the case ultimately rests with Weiss.

That decision, according to the Washington Post, may be coming soon.

In an article published on May 3, journalists Devlin Barrett, Matt Viser, Josh Dawsey and Perry Stein report, "Prosecutors are nearing a decision on whether to charge President Biden's son Hunter with tax- and gun-related violations, according to people familiar with the matter, the culmination of a four-year investigation that Republicans have sought to portray as evidence the Biden family is corrupt."

According to the Post reporters, sources say that "Weiss is nearing the end of his decision-making process" but "offered no specific timetable." They note that although Weiss is a "holdover from the Trump Administration," Garland has "granted" him "complete authority to run the investigation.

When reporters asked Garland about the case on Tuesday, May 2, he reiterated that position and responded, "I stand by my testimony, and I refer you to the U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware, who is in charge of this case and capable of making any decisions that he feels are appropriate."
